How to reduce no-shows at your grooming business

A no-show isn't just a missed groom — it's an empty slot you usually can't fill at short notice, on a day you'd blocked out. A couple a week adds up to a serious dent in your year. The good news: most no-shows are preventable. Here are seven things that work.

1. Send a reminder the day before

This is the single biggest lever. Most no-shows aren't people being difficult — they simply forgot. A short reminder the day before, by text and email, catches almost all of them. Automating it means it happens every time, without you remembering to send it. (Furbase does this for you — more below.)

2. Make it easy to rearrange

If cancelling feels awkward or hard, some owners just don't turn up. Invite them to reply to reschedule. A slot you know is free two days out is far more useful than one you discover empty on the morning.

3. Have a clear cancellation policy

Set expectations up front: how much notice you need, and what happens for late cancellations and no-shows. You don't have to be heavy-handed — a friendly, clearly worded policy does most of the work. Grab our free cancellation policy template to adapt.

4. Take a deposit from repeat offenders

You don't need deposits for everyone, but for clients who've missed before — or for long, expensive grooms — a small deposit dramatically reduces no-shows. It also filters out the bookings that were never really going to happen.

5. Confirm new clients personally

First-time clients no-show more than regulars. A quick personal confirmation when they book — and again the day before — builds the commitment that a regular already has.

6. Rebook regulars before they leave

A dog on a fixed 6–8 week cycle rarely no-shows, because the appointment is part of their routine. Book the next groom before the client walks out the door, and your diary looks after itself. Furbase flags dogs due for their next groom so none slip through.

7. Track who actually shows

If you don't record no-shows, you can't spot patterns. Keeping a simple note against each client tells you who to send an extra reminder to, or who to ask for a deposit next time.

Let the reminders run themselves

Doing all of this by hand is a job in itself. Furbase sends booking confirmations, day-before email and SMS reminders, and rebooking nudges automatically — and keeps a record of no-shows against each client. It's the easiest way to keep your diary full without adding to your admin. Try it free for 14 days.
